Flyers Main Camp a Huge Success, as Team Begins to Form Published on 9/2/2010 10:26:00 AM
With the Valencia Flyers three-day main camp complete and deemed a huge success by both Head Coach Trevor Sack and General Manager Scott Allegrini, the Flyers now look to round out their roster before the start of the regular season.
The weekend saw a total of seven games, with tons of goals and countless hard hits and tough all-around play as players battled for a roster spot. A lot of young local talent was on display, as the California Heat youth program was well represented. Former players also came out to bring the talent level even higher and give rookies a taste of what the WSHL has to offer. Even Shane Harper, recently signed to an entry-level contract by the Philadelphia Flyers made an appearance in the All-Star game on Sunday. All-in-all it made for a weekend filled with hard-nosed hockey and went a long way in setting the tone for the entire season.
The roster will be set in the upcoming days, so be sure to check back to www.valenciaflyers.com for details as they become available.
Below is a recap of each game played:
Game 1:
Team Green vs. Team White (Saturday afternoon)
Todd Hopkins scored two goals in the opening half on Christian Kramer to pace Team White to an early lead. Team Green would storm back however to score three unanswered goals before the end of the half, as Seth Tafferner, Cameron Poe, and veteran Eddie Keshishian all beat Team White’s Chris Meyer to take the 3-2 lead.
In the second half Team White would strike back with two more goals, as 2009-2010 Flyers Harout Keshishian and Evan Sharpshair beat Jesse Sczublewski to once again give Team White the lead.
Eddie Keshishian would not allow it however, as he would score twice more for Team Green to complete the hat-trick and give Green the 5-4 victory in the first game of the camp.
Game 2:
Team Royal vs. Team Black (Saturday afternoon)
Two new faces to the Flyers, Taylor Abbott and Vinny DeLorenzi hooked up on the opening goal for team Royal. The scrappy DeLorenzi situated himself in the slot and one-timed a pass home from Abbott to make it 1-0 Royal.
Team Black would strike back minutes later, as fan favorite Cam Randles used his speed to break away from the pack and beat Andrew Lux five-hole to tie the contest.
Royal would score two more to take the lead and eventually the game by a score of 3-1, as Josh Moses and Bryan Fiol both beat Black goalie Robert Chacon Jr.
Game 3: Team White vs. Team Black (Saturday evening)
Flyers returner Alex Stephens buried two wristers in the opening half to give Team White the lead until Cameron Poe and former Fresno Monster Trevor Tracy tallied for black to knot the game up.
Harout Keshishian scored early in the second half for Team White but fellow Team Armenia teammate Smbat Defterderian scored for Team Black late to end the game in a tie.
Game 4: Team Green vs. Team Royal (Saturday Night)
It was the Tyler McGreevy show in the first half for Team Green, as the Flyers returner scored a hat-trick on three hard wristers. Patrick Lee also scored twice in the first 25 minutes for Team Green. Taylor Abbott marked the lone tally in the opening half for Team Royal.
Michael Knapp, fresh off a spirited scrap, scored on a long slapper for Team Royal but it wouldn’t do much as Eddie Keshishian scored another breakaway goal to clinch it for Team Green as they took it 6-2.
Game 5: Team White vs. Team Green (Sunday morning)
Todd Hopkins, Christian Kramer and Eric Czarnick scored in the first half for Team White, as Patrick Lee’s penalty shot goal was the only marker for Team Green.
In the second half Michael Knapp again scored on a long slapper for Team White, before Bryan Fiol beat Chris Meyer through the tiniest of holes to make it 4-2 Team White.
Game 6: Team Black vs. Team Royal (Sunday afternoon)
Smbat Defterderian scored early for Team Black, but Josh Escoe answered before the end of the half for Team Royal.
Todd Hopkins scored his fifth of the weekend for Team Black to open the half but Mateja Leko and Bryan Fiol both scored for Team Royal to cap a comeback and win 3-2.
All-Star Game: Team White vs. Team Navy
The all-star game was played Sunday in front of a decent crowd of on-lookers. Players sported Flyers home and away jerseys to simulate the feel of an actual game.
Team Navy got the scoring started when former Fresno Monster Justin Wilmers put a back-hand of the bar and in off a Eddie Keshishian rebound.
Team Navy would strike again just minutes later as Preston Nowak found a puck in the slot and put a wrister past Christian Kramer to make it 2-0.
Team White would storm back in the second half for three unanswered goals to eventually take the 3-2 win.
Former Yellowstone Quake, Tracey Sato beat Stephen Palmer with a wrist shot from the slot to pull Team White within one.
Minutes later, Alex Pizzaro one-timed a pass from Daniel Baltzell past Palmer to tie the game at two.
With time ticking down Bryan Fiol was the benefactor of a Team Navy turnover deep in their own end and snapped a shot past Palmer to make it 3-2.
